What it is and its application fields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The so-called \u201c<strong>Venturi effect\u201d<\/strong> is a physical principle according to which a fluid that moves inside a conduit increases or decreases its pressure according to its speed.<br \/>\nThis characteristic was discovered in the 19th century by the Italian physicist <strong>Giovanni Battista Venturi<\/strong>, during some research on <strong>fluid mechanics,<\/strong> and it is still used today as one of the most common methods to measure velocity (Venturi tube).<\/p>\n<h2>The physical principle<\/h2>\n<p>When a fluid flows inside a duct that shows no leakage, the fluid <strong>keeps<\/strong> its mass constant (also called <strong>mass conservation principle<\/strong>).<br \/>\nsince we are talking about a fluid in motion we can extend the principle of conservation of the mass, to the flow of the fluid; therefore, if we measure 100 m3\/h of air at the inlet section of the duct, we will measure <strong>the same value<\/strong> at the output section.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17042 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pericoli-119-915.webp\" alt=\"the venturi effect explained by Pericoli\" width=\"383\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pericoli-119-915.webp 800w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pericoli-119-915-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pericoli-119-915-768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pericoli-119-915-600x450.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If we imagine that the conduit does not have a constant section, the fluid passing through it will <strong>change its speed<\/strong> according to the passage section in which it is located.<br \/>\nIt is easy to imagine the following: if a certain airflow Q \u0307, which is constant, is passing through a large opening A0 its velocity v0 will be reduced, whereas if the same airflow Q \u0307 I crossing a smaller opening A1 its\u00a0speed v1 will be <strong>higher<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17045 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pericoli_formula_velocita.webp\" alt=\"speed formula\" width=\"341\" height=\"58\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pericoli_formula_velocita.webp 693w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pericoli_formula_velocita-300x51.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/pericoli_formula_velocita-600x102.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If inside the duct there is no device capable of supplying energy to the fluid, according to the principle of energy conservation, also this value will <strong>remain constant<\/strong> between the duct inlet and its outlet.<\/p>\n<p>In order to better explain this principle it is necessary to consider the fluid that moves inside the conduit as an <strong>ideal fluid<\/strong> and apply to it the <strong>Bernoulli principle<\/strong>, that says: the sum of the kinetic energy (contribution provided by the velocity <em>v<\/em> of the fluid ), the potential energy (contribution provided by the change in height <em>h <\/em>of the fluid) and the pressure <em>p <\/em>remain constant along the conduit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17047 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/formula_Pericoli.webp\" alt=\"formula Pericoli\" width=\"334\" height=\"83\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/formula_Pericoli.webp 643w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/formula_Pericoli-300x75.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/formula_Pericoli-600x149.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 334px) 100vw, 334px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With all the simplified though it may be, and provided that the conduit is horizontal, we get the following result:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17064 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Pericoli_formula_finale-1024x157.webp\" alt=\"Pericoli formula finale\" width=\"588\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Pericoli_formula_finale-1024x157.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Pericoli_formula_finale-300x46.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Pericoli_formula_finale-768x118.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Pericoli_formula_finale-600x92.webp 600w, https:\/\/www.pericoli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Pericoli_formula_finale.webp 1181w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This formula expresses in mathematical terms the concept underlying the effect analyzed by Venturi:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In order to keep the overall energy of the fluid inside the duct constant, in the points where the velocity decreases, the pressure rises, whereas in the points where the fluid accelerates the pressure will decrease.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The application fields<\/h2>\n<p>The Venturi Effect is used daily in a multitude of applications; from spray cans, car carburetors, space rockets and even measuring instruments.
